The Ruins of Taormina

The cool thing about Sicily is that it's the foothold that the Greeks took upon Italy before settling what became Rome. The ruins of Sicily are the oldest Greek ruins in Italy.

Today we spent hours wandering around the quaint mountainside town, familiarizing ourselves with its winding streets and many stairs.

The morning started off with a wonderful breakfast buffet at our hotel, Hotel Villa Carlotta. Fresh blood orange juice, wonderful pastries, cheese, bacon, fruit. I'm excited for breakfast tomorrow!

Then we scaled these Greek ruins. Whew, what a hike! But the views were well worth it.

Later that night we had our first pizza in Italy. We actually ordered two: Eggplant and anchovy, and Olive, Sausage and mushroom. Both were quite good. The brick oven was cool, and the guy tossed the pizza dough right at the time we ordered it, so that's always a good sign.

Tomorrow we head out early for the city of Siracussa, which is home to the oldest Greek ruins in all of Italy. It's where they first touched down to start populating the Italian peninsula.

Buona Sera!
